Workshops
A major focus of this conference is to explore the meaning of sustainable development and education for  sustainable development through the lens of the Earth Charter, drawing on the experiences of a range of Earth Charter educators and activists.
Each thematic workshop will focus on the sustainability challenges faced by various sectors and how using the Earth Charter can help accelerate our much needed transition to a just, sustainable and peaceful future.  Participants will explore how Earth Charter education for sustainable ways of living can help realise and deepen the emerging understanding of ESD in the context of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.  Each workshop includes descriptive reports of projects using the Earth Charter in ESD, in inter religious and intercultural dialogue, and in the work of businesses, urban and rural communities, and global governance.
Each workshop is organized around a specific thematic area. There are 10 thematic workshops that will run in parallel during the three days of the Conference. The workshops will draw on and strengthen the work of the Earth Charter Task Forces which focuses on bringing the Earth Charter framework and resources to these thematic areas.
Each participant at the Conference will choose which workshop they would like to join. Each workshop is organized over four sessions (one session on day 1, two on day 2 and one on day 3) with a total time of 7 hours. Longer workshops can be scheduled if required of 14 hours (additional 7 hours on 30 Oct) and 21 hours ( additional 7+7 hours on 30, 31 Oct)
Groups organizing the thematic workshops may choose to meet together in pre conference sessions.
Each workshop will involve
1. Sharing of experiences and good practices.
2. Exploring and clarifying how the Earth Charter as an ethical framework and guide to action can be used most effectively in each area.
3. Exploring ways to develop the resources and tools needed to support EC activities in each area.
A summary of the discussion at the workshops will be posted on the Conference website each day. Each workshop will come up with a final report on day three. The report will include a road map for the future and a set of recommendations for the Rio plus 20 Conference proposed in Brazil 2012, the end of the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD) Conference in Japan in 2014, as well as for the next decade of the Earth Charter 2010 - 2020.
